11 September 2022 - Faerie Glen Nature Reserve
After the failed attempt last month, I was back at Faerie Glen, but this time with Roelof Jonker who had better local knowledge than I. We met at the gate just after sunrise and walked to an area that I didnt cover on my last visit. We stopped to check out the Masked Weaver serenading around it's nest

Roelof picked up a pair of Brown-backed Honeybird's displaying quite high overhead, so that gave comfort that they were around. But the display continued for some time as the birds disappeared from sight. We continued to where he had seen them before and whilst looking at a few other birds, one of the Honeybird's landed at the top of a tree quite close by. Unfortunately, it didnt stay long at all before it was off again - but I managed to get both my bins and camera onto it - but not ideal.

Walking to the next location, we had a fairly obliging Grassbird
Cape Grassbird (Sphenoeacus afer) |
Next mission was the Camaroptera, so off to the thicker habitat at the base of the koppie. It didnt take long before we heard it and then finally saw it - although it mostly stayed higher up in the canopy, but good views were had and not such good images - but, job done.

Roelof had to leave, so I enjoyed another walk around the reserve and was entertained by a large flock of Cut-throat Finches feeding on an exposed Ant heap - even seedeaters take advantage of free protein
Cut-throat Finch (Amadina fasciata) |
Oddly, there was one Red-headed Finch in the flock, looking a little out of place, but was not giving up a free breakfast either...

So, a successful morning all told and it's great when a plan actually comes together!
