23 September 2022 - Northern Farm
Andre Marx and I decided on a quick early morning visit to Northern Farm and were joined by Ron Searle who I hadn't seen in many years. Its a great location to be at just after sunrise. We all hopped in Andre's car and headed down to the quarry, finding a good few birds including African Stonechat
Female African Stonechat (Saxicola torquatus) |
Male African Stonechat (Saxicola torquatus) |
A pair of Black Crakes - here 3 species in one image
Black Crake (Zapornia flavirostra) |
Moving on, Zitting Cisticola in one of the big fields
Zitting Cisticola (Cisticola juncidis) |
Stopping near the Hamerkop nest at the edge of another dam - we hear Yellow Warbler calling and then one alighted on the top of some reeds. Great to see that they seem to be present all year round
African Yellow Warbler (Iduna natalensis) |
At our final stop near the Heronry at the largest dam, we had a Purple Heron fly by overhead, but no Cape Teal this time
Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) |
A great early morning out and we will return again in Nov/Dec once the migrants are back
